Kim Nguyen’s ‘War Witch’ has been selected as the foreign language candidate for Canada in the upcoming Oscars according to Telefilm Canada which chairs the pan-Canadian selection committee.

War Witch is a French and Lingala language film following a 14 year old girl telling the story of her life as a child soldier to her unborn baby.

The film, which stars Silver Bear winner Rachel Mwanza, was shot on location in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in a recent statement Nguyen said, “After 10 years in development and a production marked by many adventures that have provided me with everlasting memories of the Congo and its people, this recognition warms my heart.” War Witch received backing from the Canada Film Fund and was produced by Pierre Even and Marie-Claude Poulin on behalf of Item 7.

The five nominees for best foreign film are set to be announced by The Academy on January 15, with the Oscar celebration being held on February 24.
