King and Queen of alternative cinema Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter are to receive Fellowships from the British Film Institute joining 68 previous recipients of the BFI’s highest honor. Director Tim Burton joins the likes of Orson Welles, Danny Boyle and Ridley Scott who have previously been given the honor. “It means more than I can put into words to receive the BFI Fellowship and to be included alongside the great directors who have received it before me,” said Burton when the announcement was made.

His long term girlfriend, Helena Bonham Carter was equally grateful for her own accolade, saying, “I am somewhat bewildered and not sure I am deserving of such an honor as a Fellowship from the BFI, but I shall accept it with deep gratitude.” Previous actresses on whom the BFI have bestowed this honor include Elizabeth Taylor, Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Smith, Bette Davis and Judi Dench.

Burton and Bonham carter have been together for around 11 years and have two children together. The pair have expressed no desire to marry, saying they are simply too lazy to arrange a wedding. Having worked together on numerous movies, the pair say that blending work and personal life has led to a strong relationship.
