Fans of The Sopranos will be excited to learn that James Gandolfini is headed back to HBO, this time to star as the lead in a pilot for ‘Criminal Justice’ written by Richard Price and directed by Steven Zaillian. The series is a New York crime drama which is loosely based on a BBC series of the same name. Joining Gandolfini in the cast are Rizwan Ahmed, Peyman Moadi and Poorna Jagannathan.

The British incarnation of Criminal Justice had two five episode seasons and each was broadcast over successive nights. HBO are looking to share the season one storyline which follows a young man who goes home with a girl he has met expecting a wild night of sexual antics, but awakes in the morning to find her dead and has no memory of what happened. Ahmed will play the defendant while Gandolfini takes on the role of a jailhouse lawyer.
