Transitions help cue the audience to what is happening in a scene, or bring them from one scene to the next. Several different transitions are used in production to create the desired effect.

The cut is the most common transition. It is an instant switch from one shot to another.

The dissolve is produced by fading out one image while bringing in another at the same time. This sometimes indicates that two actions are happening at the same time, or can be used to suggest the slow passing of time.

The fade is slow change between a black screen and video, or from video to black again.
