The third season of HBO drama ‘Boardwalk Empire’ premiered in the 9pm slot to 2.9 million viewers, equaling the figures for the previous season finale last September.

HBO have cofirmed that in total, 4.6 million viewers tuned in across the various plays this past Sunday, a slight increase on the previous season premiere as viewers flocked to catch up on the antics of Nucky Thompson and co. Of the three showings the 9pm one drew the highest number of viewers, with the 10pm airing pulling in 1.1 million and the 11pm repeat totalling 624,000. HBO subscribers will also be able to watch via the VOD and HBO Go options meaning that the viewing figures look set to increase throughout the remainder of the week.

With such impressive numbers it seems likely that Terence Winter will be sure of a renewal deal for a fourth season of his skein, although HBO have yet to comment to that effect.
